CANTOR SHAYNA PEAVEY
Assistant Cantor

Cantor Shayna Peavey grew up in Springfield, MO and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in Music Education.  During her time at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Shayna served as student cantor at Scarsdale Synagogue-Tremont Temple in Scarsdale, NY, Congregation Shir Shalom in Suffern, NY, and Temple Beth El in South Bend, IN.

Shayna spent two of her years of study at the Jerusalem campus of HUC-JIR, during which time she traveled to the Former Soviet Union to serve as student cantor to Jewish communities there.  She first went to Russia where she lead Passover sederim and then to Belarus where she sang during Yom Kippur and again during Purim.  These experiences made a huge impact on Shayna and she hopes to continue to support the international Jewish community throughout her career.

As a result of her interest in world Jewry and her time spend in Israel, Shayna wrote her thesis about the music of the Ethiopian Jews.  She spent time researching the Ethiopian community while living in Jerusalem, and completed her thesis, I am Black and Beautiful, O Daughters of Jerusalem: The Development of the Music of the Ethiopian Jews here in New York.  Shayna hopes to continue to study this community and their music throughout her career.

Invested in May 2007, Shayna is excited to begin her cantorial career by joining the Rodeph Sholom community.
